“Watch your thoughts, they become words; watch your words, they become actions; watch your actions, they become habits; watch your habits, they become your character. . .”
The Character Counts! Program is a national effort to increase character education by offering resources, training, and information about the Six Pillars of Character: TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, FAIRNESS, CARING, and CITIZENSHIP.
For the past twenty years in Queen Anne’s County, character coaches have been visiting local classrooms to share lessons on the Commissioner proclaimed, “Pillar of the Month”.
The Character Counts! Program has consistently shown increases in student attendance, academic achievement, positive behavior choices and a more positive sense of self and future.

RESPONSIBILITY: Do what you're supposed to do. Plan ahead. Persevere; keep on trying! Do your best. Use self-control. Be self-disciplined. Think before you act - consider the consequences. Be accountable for your words, actions, and attitudes. Set a good example for others.
FAIRNESS: Play by the rules. Take turns and share. Be open-minded; listen to others. Don't take advantage of others. Don't blame others carelessly. Treat all people fairly.
CARING: Be kind. Be compassionate and show you care. Express gratitude. Forgive others. Help people in need. Be charitable.
CITIZENSHIP: Do your part to improve your school and community. Protect the environment. Cooperate. Get involved in the community. Stay informed. Vote. Be a good neighbor. Obey laws and rules. Respect authority. Volunteer.
